New railway bridge boosts trade in Nuevo Laredo

A second international railway bridge has been inaugurated, connecting Nuevo Laredo Tamaulipas with Laredo Texas. This bridge, dedicated to Patrick J. Ottensmeyer, joins seven other railway border crossings that seamlessly connect rail service with the United States. The investment in this project was 100 million dollars and expands railway operational capacity at the border, where an average of 28 trains cross daily.

During the inauguration event, attended by key figures such as the Secretary of Infrastructure Communications and Transportation and the Head of the Railway Regulatory Agency, the commitment of the Mexican freight railway to the growth of foreign trade in the North American region was highlighted. According to Francisco Fabila, President of the AMF, this bridge symbolizes the Mexican railway sector's focus on building bridges and not walls.

Mexican railway concessionaires have established direct services connecting Mexico with important consumer centers in the United States and Canada. Along the seven land borders in the states of Baja California, Sonora, Coahuila, Chihuahua, and Tamaulipas, an average of 61 trains operate daily, transporting almost half a million tons of cargo each day. In addition to the inauguration of the new bridge, the reopening of a border crossing in Ojinaga, Chihuahua with Texas has been proposed to facilitate the flow of trains.

The expansion of border infrastructure is part of the railway agenda, aimed at simplifying procedures and standardizing processes to improve the efficiency of railway crossings. It also highlights the connection provided by the ferry, linking the Isthmus of Tehuantepec with the East Coast of the United States, which is considered a valuable tool for the market in south and central Mexico.
